Superior National Forest

Plan your next Minnesota Vacation in Orr where you will find plenty of family activities to choose from!

The Superior National Forest consists of three million acres and is located in northeastern Minnesota’s arrowhead region. Duluth Minnesota is about 60 miles to the south of the forest. Superior National Forest runs along the United States-Canadian border for about 150 miles. Teddy Roosevelt established this land by proclamation in 1909. This for-sight has allowed us a land that offers many natural resources including a wide variety of recreational opportunities that can be enjoyed by all year round.
Year-round recreation opportunities are plentiful on the Superior National Forest for those who love the out-of-doors. The forest also is an ideal place for swimming, horseback riding, kayaking, sailing, waterskiing, rock hunting, berry picking, nature study, photography and so much more. In addition to summer activities, north woods winters are ideally suited to winter sports such as cross-country and down hill skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, skating, and sledding.
Over a half million acres of the forest are covered in surface waters. There are also more than 2300 miles of streams both warm and cold water that flow within the boundaries of the Superior Forest. Fish species such as walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, lake trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, and brown trout can be found in abundance in these waters.
There are many wild animals that live within the forest including: deer, moose, gray wolf, and black bear. Over 300 gray wolves continue to survive with the boundaries of the Superior National Forest.
The many lakes now found in the Superior were formed in wake of retreating glaciers. The forested landscape you see today is the result of an ongoing process of nature rebuilding itself following glaciations. Retreat of the last glacier left the area bare of soil and vegetation. Gradually, soil formed on this barren rock landscape and vegetation once again staked a claim. These processes continue today.
There are interpretive programs and visitor center exhibits that are in place to help introduce you to get you started on your own new outdoor adventure. You are also asked to travel lightly and leave no trace behind.
